CERN

Unicorn University has developed a production database (PD) for the internal detector in the ATLAS experiment at CERN. The work began in 2015 and should be completed in 2024. The PD project involves the two largest multipurpose elementary particle detectors installed on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In 2012, the ATLAS detector was the first to provide proof of the Higgs boson, the existence of which was further confirmed by experimental results in 2013. Now, the ATLAS detector is being used to gather other data on ultimate particles of matter at increased luminosity, while preparations are being made for its upcoming reconstruction to meet the needs of higher energy outputs.

It is our job to design, build, and program the production database for the internal detector on the extended ATLAS experiment, which is scheduled to go live in 2024. This database will store information on all detector component parts, their functionalities, mutual interconnections, and all tests performed on basic elements. Experiment participants from all over the world will be able to see the current state of reconstruction, as well how the detector component parts work and are interrelated. This will make the building and operation of the newly reconstructed internal detector much easier.

Our students have the opportunity to actively participate in this project, as developers, testers, or project coordinators. They will work on tasks under the leadership of Unicorn University teaching professionals. The best students will have the chance of an internship at CERN or at one of its partner research facilities, such as the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, the University of Glasgow, and many more.
