About Ondra
Ondřej Synek studied Software Development. During his time at the university, he switched from regular study to studying on the job, so that he could both study and work properly. For his final thesis, he developed a GTD application in UnicornUniverse. Ondřej completed his internship at Unicorn. Over the years, he took the opportunity to work at other companies, but in the end he decided to return where he started, and he says he wouldn’t change a thing.
Why Unicorn University
“I was looking for a school where I could learn the IT from its very basics, as I had almost no experience at the time. Plus, I got quite intrigued on its Doors Open Day: you would expect traditional spaces, such as classrooms, auditoriums, reading rooms, as we all know them. But this was quite different. The entire premises are quire informal, reminding me more of a business company environment.”
Weekend Workshops instead of Traditional Lessons
Unicorn University breaks the mould, defying established standards with its teaching methods which accentuate a predominantly practical approach. Students get involved in real-world projects since their freshman year. Some lessons come in the form of workshops or hacktatons. “I think there were about three weekend workshops each semester: we got real-world assignments and had to handle their business or technical aspects. For example, we had to develop an airline system. Throughout the weekend, we worked in teams to present our solutions to people from the academia as well as from external companies in the last evening.”
A Few Words from Ondra
“I would really recommend attending Unicorn University as it actually teaches you to do things in ways in which you will have to do them later in the real world. It’s no theory; it’s just how it is. When it came to employment, I had never any problems finding one. I had many more offers than I could ever need and the same can be said for all my former schoolmates. In general, I would recommend this school especially for its hands-on approach, which I perceive as the greatest benefit of all and also the greatest difference from other schools I know.”
