Self-study takes the form of a video book combining video lectures and written study materials. Knowledge verification and practice take place in the uuCourseKit application, where the final tests are also available.

About the course

The aim of the course is to provide comprehensive information in all contexts so that the participant is able to orientate in the key processes of electricity trading in Europe. The course also focuses on understanding the principles of electricity market liberalization and gaining an overview of other important areas of energy. The course also discusses the issue of business planning at the national and international level, including related legislative aspects. The course also introduces participants to the typical IT environment of transmission systems - all from the point of view of electricity and gas. The perspective of energy is extended by lectures focused on HVDC (ie the area of submarine interconnectors), a highly current topic of electromobility, but also the applied area of prediction methods.

Course outline

1. Module: Electricity as a commodity and a description of the electricity market
  • Basic characteristics of the electricity market, principles of market functioning in relation to physical processes, historical context, the role of market participants.
2. Module: Legislative standards of electricity trading
  • Basic legislative standards related to electricity trade at the level of the Czech Republic and the EU.
3. Module: Planning and management of transmission systems
  • Physical properties of transmission, types of power plants and their properties, basic principles of transmission system planning, types and characteristics of production sources.
4. Module: Provision of system and support services
  • Description of system and support services, analysis of important services such as Frequency Containment Reserves, Frequency Restoration Reserves and Reserve Replacement.
5. Module: Comprehensive planning of transmission systems
  • Real-time system management, Smart Grids - SmartMetering, SmartHome, SmartGrids in the Czech Republic.
6. Module: Electricity trade
  • Basic principles of the liberalized electricity market, access to networks, market organization, registration and financial settlement of trades, risk management, trading on stock exchanges, measurement, evaluation and settlement of deviations.
7. Module: Cross - border trade
  • Transmission capacities as limited resources, calculation of free capacities, auctions of cross-border capacities, participation of stock exchanges in cross-border trading.
8. Module: International coordination of system management
  • Planning of international electricity exchanges, Use of netting, Financial settlement.
9. Module: Solving situations of imminent congestion
  • International Settlement of Deviations, Compensation for Transit Transfers, Transparency of Cross-Border Trade.
10. Module: Emergencies and rights and obligations of market participants
  • Definition of a state of emergency, tools for solutions, control stages, examples of real states of emergency.
11. Module: Contracts in the electricity market
  • Contracts on regulated access, between suppliers and customers, the basic form of contracts for final customers.
12. Module: Regulation and regulated prices
  • The need for regulation, methods of price regulation
13.Module: Transmission System Control System (SCADA / EMS)
  • Significance for transmission system operators, basic division, technologies, communication protocols, work with data.
14. Module: Transmission system measuring system
  • Acceptance of measured values, communication protocols, validation, aggregation, substitution, statistics, exports.
15. Module: Retail Data hub
  • Evidence of data on end consumers - measured values, change of electricity supplier, etc., data processing, access rights, link to smart grids.
16. Module: Security system
  • Security calculations over big data, data exchange within the European network.
