The course aims at acquainting students with the essentials of law and legislation in the Czech Republic. The course focuses on introducing areas of law useable in a student’s life, from the business, work, private and public point of view. The core of the course comprises legal disciplines that students can apply in their professional and personal life. Above all, the course deals with the public law (potentially law of debenture, agreements etc.), material, process and business law (enterprise essentials etc.), work, copyright, personal data protection and criminal law.

Course outline

General introduction to law
The term, the importance and division of law, types of legal cultures, sources of law, legal relations, legal responsibility, the state power in the Czech Republic.
Introduction to Public Law
Principles of the public law, natural persons, representation, limitation, rights in rem, easement, liability, unjust enrichment (suit for compensation, suit for unjust enrichment).
Introduction to Civil Law
Obligations, obligations from offence, consumer agreements (e.g. purchase agreement, contract for work, terms and conditions, property transfer agreement, lease agreement), defective warranty (suit to enforce a complaint) etc.
Introduction to Civil Procedural Law
The system of courts, types of court proceedings, first degree proceeding (motion to initiate a court proceeding, delivering, argumentation, decision etc.), second degree proceeding (types of remedies – regular and exceptional etc.), seizure procedure.
Introduction to Business Law
Kinds of enterprise, entrepreneur – a natural person, legal entities, other forms (formation and termination of a business corporation, a motion to enter a business corporation into the business registry, business corporation transfer etc.).
Debenture relations
Formation, changes and termination of obligations, selected types of agreement (e.g. purchase agreement, contract for work, lease agreement, property transfer).
Introduction to Copyright Law
Copyright, author, co-authorship, duality of the Copyright Law, employee work, computer programmes and databases, licence (licence agreement, a suit to protect copyright).
Introduction into Industrial Property Law
rademark, domain names, information protection, the business secret (a suit with a motion to exercise preliminary measures against breaking domain name rights, NDA).
Introduction to Labour Law
The origin, changes and termination of employment, competition restrictions, competition clause, work rights and responsibilities (work agreement, a suit for invalid termination of employment).
Privacy and personal data protection
Protection from the viewpoint of Civil Law, personal protection, Criminal Law and Administrative Law. Main terms and definitions – suit to protect personality, a criminal complaint to protect personality.
Personal data protection
Protection from the viewpoint of Administrative Law, the Personal Data Protection Act, GDPR, main changes and principles (how to implement GDPR).
Criminal Law
Essential terms and principles, selected states of facts of crimes, the criminal procedure (a criminal complaint, a criminal case).
