Unicorn University Review: What It's Like to Study There, According to Students and Graduates

“If a young person wants to work in a high-level position, it’s almost impossible,” he says, adding that he’s always wanted to interact with customers, be responsible for products, and be in charge. “I can only do all of this if I have something of my own,” he adds. So it came as no surprise when Josef, then 20 years old, founded the development startup TwoDo in 2018.
However, he couldn’t balance work and school at a public university. So he decided to leave and look for an alternative elsewhere. During his search, he came across Unicorn University.

He can apply the theory directly in practice
But he sees many more benefits. He is currently enrolled in a master’s program, and in his own words, he couldn’t have made a better choice.
“The school has high-quality instructors who have real-world experience and know their field,” he adds. “I especially like the close connection with Unicorn, a company that has achieved tremendous success,” says Josef. As a business owner, he appreciates being able to apply the knowledge he’s gained directly in practice.

One example is his bachelor’s thesis, in which he described and analyzed the processes at his company. The thesis also included a financial analysis that helped him develop a strategy for the coming year. It clearly paid off, as his company, TwoDo, is growing successfully. This year, it launched new software that simplifies administrative tasks for both customers and developers. “We’re able to handle a portal with 1,800 pages in eight languages using just 70 components,” Josef explains. “We break down development into logical, reusable units, which allow us to create pages of any size without overburdening the developers themselves.”
He also adds that the environment at Unicorn University itself is a major source of inspiration for him. “At the university, I see the corporate culture and the scale that software can achieve. The atmosphere at Unicorn University motivates me to aim higher,” he says. Josef is just starting his second year in the master’s program in Applied Economics and Data Analysis. But he already knows what the topic of his thesis will be. “I’ll definitely focus on TwoDo again, but this time I’ll be looking at econometric models,” explains Křenek. That’s the subject that has really captivated him. “It’s not easy, but I still enjoy it immensely. We have a great professor—I’ve watched his lectures about five times,” he adds.

She came to our school from a business academy with no prior experience in IT. “I was looking for a field with a future. Unicorn University caught my attention because it offers a lot of hands-on experience, so I decided to give IT a try,” she says. Even so, she admits that it wasn’t easy at first, mainly because she took a year off after high school to work as an au pair. “I worked really hard during my first semester in college. I studied up to six hours a day, but in the end, it all worked out, and now I’ve got the hang of it,” she continues.
Even though there are barely ten girls in her class, they work very well together as a group. “I have no problem with the guys, and I think we complement each other. They know some things, and I know others. It works, and we’re happy to help each other out.” Thanks to the school, she even landed a six-month internship at Microsoft, where she works on the Azure cloud platform.

From an Internship to Self-Employment
She also briefly collaborated with Unicorn University Director Marek Beránek, helping him manage various university projects. “I wrote to the director saying I’d like to take advantage of the opportunity to work with the university, and we came to an agreement,” she recalls. She considers this a major advantage. Unicorn University has many partner companies, including the IT firm Unicorn itself, and thanks to mandatory internships, students get to work on real-world projects. “You learn how challenging it is to coordinate with people. It taught me a lot,” she says.
But what she enjoys most is web development and design—something she discovered precisely because of her studies at the university. “In my freshman year, we took a basic course that really got me excited, and I kept pursuing it from there,” she recalls. She even recently obtained a business license and now works as a self-employed professional. “Right now, I’m collaborating with three companies, building websites for them. I enjoy it,” she says.
And she’s not the only one. As many as one-third of students even start their own businesses during or shortly after their studies. “Because we teach through hands-on experience, students have no trouble finding a place in the job market or starting their own businesses. They have the necessary education, and we’re happy to support them in that,” explains Marek Beránek.

Even though Unicorn University is known for its hands-on teaching and individualized approach, Tomšů was very surprised by how the school treats its students. “Not only the instructors but also the staff know every student by name. Everything was always handled right away, and nothing was a problem—and that applied not only on campus but also at Unicorn,” explains Jaromír.

He also appreciates the online study materials, such as textbooks and testing apps, as well as recordings of some lectures. “I didn’t have to carry my lecture notes around with me. At the beginning of the program, we were given an iPad, which was a great tool. We could study literally anywhere,” he continues.
He also fondly recalls the marketing classes taught by Zuzana Boháčová. “Her approach to students and the subject matter was excellent and personable. She did a great job of connecting theory with practice,” he emphasizes. The curriculum also includes two-day workshops. “That was the best part for me,” Tomšů continues. Students meet over the weekend to work on real-world assignments for a specific client. They then present their solutions not only to individual instructors but often also to external experts from partner companies that collaborate with the school.

Unicorn University also strives to motivate students to work on the school’s development and scientific research projects. It has a long-standing partnership with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). This is a technical facility capable of recreating the conditions of the universe’s origin, allowing scientists to observe what happened in the first moments after the Big Bang.
Jaromír worked on this project for over a year as a tester and for another seven months as a development coordinator. “Being part of something like this and working alongside the director was fulfilling and really gave me a lot,” he recalls.
Today, thanks in part to his studies at Unicorn University, he is ready to take over the family business, SATTURN HOLEŠOV, which operates in the field of electronic communications and information technology in conjunction with environmental projects. “I wanted to better understand the people I’d be working with. Studying at Unicorn University gave me the necessary IT background, experience, knowledge, perspective, important contacts, and lots of friends,” says Jaromír.
