Unicorn University students develop particle accelerator software

One of the main advantages of studying at Unicorn University is the opportunity to get involved in real projects for renowned companies. One such project is the development of a production database for the ATLAS indoor detector experiment, which is expected to be completed in 2024.

Unicorn University is a private college with the motto "We prove you can do it". Its students are motivated not only by a qualified teaching staff with extensive work experience, but also by prestigious internships. Students have the opportunity to complete internships at companies such as Unicorn or Microsoft, as well as to work with scientific institutions around the world. Thanks to these opportunities, there is no graduate who leaves school with a blank CV and unable to find employment in the field.

Let's move for a moment to Switzerland, where there is a 27-kilometre-long tunnel with a hadron particle accelerator. The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is conducting research into unknown aspects of physics and simulating the conditions of the universe's formation. As a result, scientists are able to observe events immediately after the Big Bang.

Cooperation at international level

We will now return to the Czech Republic, specifically to Unicorn University. It is here that students are involved in the development of software for CERN, specifically for the internal detector of the ATLAS experiment, which will allow scientists to more easily find the faulty part in case something breaks. In other words, the students, led by director Mark Beranek, are developing an application that stores a digital twin of all the components of the internal detector, including their structure, allowing scientists to find the cause of the problem without having to manually disassemble the detector. "The students have a unique opportunity to actively participate in the creation of unique software for a very prestigious scientific department and to be in contact with the best people from all over the world," highlights Director Beranek.

Tatsiana Sarokina is a second-year student of the Bachelor of Software Development program at Unicorn University and also joined the project as a Front-End Developer. "As a student at Unicorn University, I got the opportunity to actively participate in this project as a front-end developer. I was excited and couldn't say no," she recalls. Tatsiana is responsible for developing components, mainly using JavaScript and the UU5 Library.

For this reason, she would definitely recommend this college to anyone interested in the IT field. "In my first year I got to do real projects," she recalls. She also highlights the fact that Unicorn University has kept up with the times. "We are learning on modern technologies that are in demand. Moreover, we can combine our studies with work. Every lecture is recorded and can be played back at any time," he continues, adding: "It's where I wrote my first code and fell in love with IT."
