The school year is already knocking not only on the door but also on the browser windows in university systems. What should you at least try out to make the new academic year and its responsibilities less hellish for you?
For several hundred students, autumn marks the beginning of a new year, which for some is their last year and for others is the start of a new phase. If you're looking to improve your routine or make your life easier, here are some tips on how to remember nothing in the new academic year, not go crazy and make your study life a little more enjoyable.
Our tips for a smooth start to the semester
- View the recommended study plan for your year and see the current timetable.
- List the courses you absolutely need to take and which you need to repeat in case of previous failure.
- Create folders on the cloud for each course so that you can store not only notes, but also term papers or, in short, whatever you produce during the semester. Most storage sites use automatic storage so you won't lose your notes if you absolutely have to lock your computer or move somewhere.
- Try keeping a planner - either paper or on your phone.
- In addition to deadlines for term papers, you can also record your schedule there with regular repetition.
- Pro tip: Did you know that at Unicorn University, you can seamlessly plug your calendar from the school system into your Google Calendar? Detailed instructions can be found here.
- Try to arrive in the first week for all enrolled classes to see what is expected of you.
- Try to make time between classes for coffee, tea, or an evening beer with your classmates so you can discuss not only how great your summer was, but also what you can do to help each other.
- If you're new, or haven't managed to get to know anyone properly during your studies so far, try taking advantage of a university event. For example, take part in a joint tutoring session with your classmates or go on an adaptation course. Adaptive courses are a great place to network with classmates across the years, make new friends and collect some memories.
- If you don't understand something, ask questions! Not just your classmates, but maybe your lecturers or the study department. Also, try looking at the handbook to brush up on some of the rules and procedures.
- Find at least an hour of time in the week to sort through what you have to do in the week ahead.
- Last-minute deadlines and stress can take a toll on you, so try to accomplish things ahead of time. When you're unsure or stumped, even with worries outside of school, seek help from family, friends or perhaps a therapist. You are never alone. You can also use our student counselor, Zuzana Boháčová.
