174th Session of the Plenary of the Czech Rectors' Conference at Unicorn University

On February 15, Unicorn University hosted the 174th meeting of the Plenary Session of the Czech Rectors' Conference. This important event was attended by top representatives of the universities and selected guests. Speakers included the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports Mikuláš Bek, the Chairman of the National Accreditation Office Robert Plaga and other professional representatives of ministries and institutions working in the field of higher education.
The Czech Rectors' Conference (CRC), founded on 28 January 1993, is an association of rectors of all public (26), all state (2) and some private (17) universities in the Czech Republic. Its mission is to deal with fundamental issues of higher education, to take positions on them and to apply them in legislative and executive institutions and authorities. The CRC establishes and maintains relations with Rectors' Conferences of other countries and with relevant international institutions, in particular with the European University Association (EUA).
One of the main topics, in the context of the tragic events of December, was security at universities. The debate was held together with representatives of the Ministry of the Interior and focused in particular on the search for effective strategies to ensure a safe environment at universities.
The issue of science, research and innovation is also an integral part of the academic environment. The discussion, chaired by Pavel Doleček, Deputy Minister for Science, Research and Innovation, focused on reform measures in the area of knowledge transfer. Emphasis was placed on the forthcoming changes in the evaluation of scientific creativity, the issue of excellence and the strengthening of applied research and cooperation between companies and academia.
Interesting information from the field of international mobility was provided by representatives of the House of Foreign Cooperation (DZS), who pointed out the clearly positive effect of the education of foreign students on the domestic economy.
One of the new topics opened at the meeting was the issue of micro-certificates and their framing in the educational system. Although a number of universities, including Unicorn University, now offer microcertificates, issues such as their electronic imprint, a common national database and other apects that this new trend in education brings need to be worked out.
Thus, the 174th session of the CRC, hosted by Unicorn University, produced a number of important conclusions and suggestions for future meetings. A summary of these was offered in the press conference and in the published CRC Resolution.
What are microcredits? Microcredits are the answer to the current corporate need for intensive targeted development of the most important job skills. In cooperation with companies, universities create small-scale courses, after successful completion of which the participant receives an internationally recognised electronic certificate. The key advantages of these courses are their high practicality, the possibility of studying on the job and the quality at university level. Microcredits are short programmes that have a study intensity determined by standard ECTS credits, just like courses in regular long programmes (Bachelor's or Master's). The usual range is 6-30 ECTS per microcredit.
